Middle Leaders

Dan Evans – Curriculum Leader of MFL and Leader of EAL

Dan joined Moor End Academy in September 2017 and has experience of working in a range of ‘Outstanding’ schools across Yorkshire. Before taking on the role of Subject Leader of MFL, Dan undertook the role of MAT Lead Facilitator of MFL for South Pennine Academies, leading and supporting the development of MFL across Primary and Secondary schools in the Trust.

Originally from the Midlands, Dan studied both his undergraduate degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Leeds and has lived in Leeds ever since. Whilst in Higher Education, Dan spent time teaching English as a Foreign Language in Germany and studied courses at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.

Dan thoroughly enjoys being able to share his enthusiasm and love for languages with students on a daily basis, supporting them to develop the broad range of skills learning a language brings and encouraging them to become excellent communicators. In his drive to improve engagement and attainment across the department, Dan has lead a variety of initiatives to improve Teaching and Learning. In 2020, he completed his National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership, focussing on the implementation of metacognition, retrieval practice and knowledge retention and recall.

More recently, Dan has taken on responsibility the leadership of the provision for students with English as an Additional Language. Following transformational change, students are supported to develop their English Language proficiency and better access the curriculum. He is dedicated to ensuring all students fulfil their potential and have every opportunity available to them in the future.

During his teaching career, he has been fortunate to work with Huddersfield Horizon SCITT as Subject Tutor for MFL and has mentored both trainee and newly qualified teachers. He also supports the Director of the SCITT and sits on the SCITT Quality Assurance committee.

In addition to leading the MFL and EAL departments, Dan is an Olevi accredited development coach, supporting and empowering staff across the Academy. Dan has led many successful trips both in the area and abroad to provide students with the opportunity to experience languages first hand, and has been involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including drama productions and the Duke of Edinburgh award.

To enhance his professional development, Dan is an AQA GCSE examiner for French and German and volunteers as a Governor at a local school in Leeds.

Outside of work, Dan enjoys travelling, music and meeting new people.
