Remembrance Day Poppies 2015
Weeks Beginning Monday 19.10.15 & 02.11.15
Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 8 November 2015, is a day for the nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. We commemorated this in the Academy through the sale and wearing of red poppies during that week, coinciding with Remembrance Assemblies, in collaboration with the Royal British Legion. All students were expected to support this. In addition, the week prior to this we sold Purple Poppies on behalf of SPANA, an animal charity founded to support working animals across the world, in recognition of the contribution animals make in times of conflict.
Remembrance Assemblies took place the week commencing the 2nd November, and on the 6th, the Year 7 Assembly, several representatives from the Royal British legion participated in an interactive assembly of commemoration and remembrance: Stephen Quarmby, Madeline Bower, Jackie Morris (standard bearer for Golcar branch and also the County Standard Bearer), Malcolm Jenkinson, Janet Quarmby and Margaret Binns were part of the activity. Mrs Bower is the daughter of Mr Charles Landon, BEM, the former President of Golcar Branch, D Day veteran and a good friend of the school, who passed away in July 2015.
Almost £300 was raised from the sale of poppies and Royal British Legion stationery and £120 for SPANA.
