Racing to Silverstone

Over the course of the last year, four year 10 students at Moor End Academy have been researching, designing testing and driving a radio controlled, scale model Land Rover.

The students have been participating in the 4 x 4 in schools competition sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover. The aim of the competition is to challenge young students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to produce the problem solvers of tomorrow.

Team ROBUST have spent more than 40 hours each, after school, to design and build their vehicle. Along the way, they have had to gain sponsorship from local companies and participate in fundraising activities in school, solve suspension and transmission problems and develop electronic circuitry.

The end result was an outstanding performance in the North West Regional heats held at JLR’s manufacturing plant at Halewood.

The Team came away with trophies for: Best Track Performance, Best Engineered Vehicle and Overall winner of the Professional Class.

Preparation is now under way for the National Championships to be held in April at Silverstone Race Track where Team ROBUST will attempt to win a place in the World Championships.
