Moor End becomes a Beacon in Holocaust education!

We are delighted to inform you that our academy has been accepted onto the prestigious University College London Beacon School in Holocaust Education Programme for 2020/21. Only 19 other schools nationally have been accepted onto the programme, and we feel honoured that both our attitudes towards and educational aspirations in this area of history have been acknowledged. The aim of the programme is to improve the quality of teaching and learning about the Holocaust which our students experience during their time at the academy, and to create a platform to disseminate research and embed a culture of sharing best practice with other schools within the Beacon School network. This will ensure that students both locally and within the South Pennine Academies Trust will benefit.

Mr Harden, Subject Leader for History, will lead on the programme, supported by Mrs Hutley, Assistant Principal. All staff will benefit from initial training, after which a team of 15 staff (and hopefully some students from our Student Leadership Group!) from across the curriculum and pastoral team will work on the programme. It is vital that our students have a rich understanding of the importance of this event, and our curriculum will ensure that common misconceptions are addressed. We are very much looking forward to cross-curricular collaboration from History, English, Drama, Citizenship, Art, PSHE and Citizenship!

This programme is an integral part of our Personal Development curriculum, as we encourage our students to think critically and develop a sense of agency. Watch this space!
