Head Boy's Speech
Open Evening September 2018

Good evening and welcome to our wonderful academy! My name is Brwa Hassan, and I have the privilege of being head boy at Moor End Academy. Following on from Mr Rafiq’s presentation, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you my story about being a student at Moor End Academy. In my previous years I wasn't a perfect student, and I confess that I wasted some of my education. I had no motive and no goals but what I did have was potential and the ability to change. I heard Mrs Hutley our Assistant Principal talking about creating a student leadership group; a group of students who would have a strategic role in the running of the academy. She made it very clear that everyone deserves a second chance, and that she was more interested in what we were going to do in the future rather than what we had done in the past. I realised this was my opportunity, but I needed someone to look up to.

Recently Mr Rafiq joined us at Moor End, and the transformation in such a short space of time has been incredible. I saw his rules and expectations and concluded prematurely and wrongly that he was too strict and too harsh. How wrong I was. As I saw him more and more my opinion changed; it was clear that he had a vision for every single member of our community, and has the drive and passion needed. He doesn’t know this, but it was him who gave me my drive to succeed and my chance was there to take. I applied for the head boy role. Never in a million years did I think I’d be successful, but I didn’t give up; I was resilient and perservered. I poured my heart into the application for Head Boy and I succeeded, which is why you see me standing here before you this evening. If it wasn’t for the amount Mr Rafiq inspired me I wouldn’t be here giving this speech.

I wholeheartedly recommend this school to each and everyone of you because we are not just a school. We are a diverse mix and a community, on a journey to world class, Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy meeting our amazing staff and students, don’t forget to sample our delicious food in the dining hall!
